American Steve Shand formally charged with migrant smuggling

Steve Anthony Shand, 47, faces two counts of human smuggling, Acting U.S. Attorney Charles J. Kovats said in a news release.

Steve Shand was arrested in January in connection with the discovery of the bodies of a family of four of Indian origin.

The victims froze to death near the Canada-US border, near Emerson. They would have walked for more than eleven hours in the snow and the freezing cold, according to a testimony.

In all likelihood, the four deceased and seven other nationals were trying to cross the border between Canada and the United States.

On January 19, US Border Patrol agents arrested Steve Shand aboard a van carrying two undocumented Indian nationals.

Five other people of Indian origin were also arrested near this location, according to the affidavit.
