From January 9-16, gamers from around the world showed off their skills in 148 video game speed races, from classics to freshly released titles, to raise money for charity.
To achieve their ends, participants usually take advantage of development bugs, covert attacks, and combinations on the controller to gain speed.
Among the most notorious races is that of Mitchriz who, blindfolded, managed to complete the game in just over two hours Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It wasn’t a record though, unlike InsertLogic, which impressed by beating the game. Kena: Bridge of Spirits in 28 minutes and 35 seconds.
The player Jaxler has meanwhile achieved the feat of finishing PumpkinJack in 44 minutes and 18 seconds, also breaking a record. Shadowthepast has set a new time to beat for Webbed, completed in 17 minutes and 21 seconds.
The player Olenomame created the surprise by finishing the game Stardew Valley in 17 minutes.
A special mention to Quebecer Alex
V0oid Rochette, who came close to first place by a second in a tight fast race in the 1995 game donkey kong country 2, at the opening of the marathon, on January 9th.
It is precisely 3,416,729 US dollars (4,277,232 Canadian dollars) that will be donated to the American foundation Prevent Cancer, according to what the official account of the marathon, @GamesDoneQuick, announced on Twitter.
This is a record for the event, which raised US$3.1 million (C$3.9 million) in the summer of 2021. Some 28,000 people are behind 49,000 donations, according to the GDQ analysis system.
The Games Done Quick Marathons made their humble beginnings in 2010. The event quickly grew in importance and became affiliated with multiple causes in the past decade.
Since its inception, the organization has raised more than US$37 million (C$46.3 million) in donations, which have been made available to international organizations, including Doctors Without Borders and the Malala Fund, as well as for cancer research and autism research.
Speed racers can watch players’ feats on the organization’s Twitch channelHave (New window)Have.
GDQ also gives them an appointment from February 27 to March 5 for the GDQ Frost Fatales women’s winter marathon. Details are not yet known for the annual Summer Games Done Quick (SGDQ) summer event.
