Barbados officially proclaimed itself a republic, removing Queen Elizabeth II from her title as head of state, in a ceremony on Tuesday attended by her son, Prince Charles.
As a symbol of regime change, the Royal Standard of the United Kingdom was withdrawn and Governor General Lady Sandra Mason was sworn in as the Caribbean island nation’s first President.
I, Sandra Prunella Mason swear to be faithful and bear true allegiance to Barbados according to the law, with the help of God, said the new president.
The island with 287,000 inhabitants, known for its paradisiacal beaches, its rum and for being the birthplace of the great world star Rihanna thus puts an end to centuries of subjugation to the British crown.
The new president was elected in October by direct universal suffrage.
