Blood and plasma requirements remain high

Until now, men could not donate plasma or blood if they had had sex with another man in the previous three months. According to the new terms and conditions announced by Health Canada, this selection criterion will be less restrictive as of next fall for all of Canada, except Quebec. In the province, the new evaluation grid will take effect in two stages: it will apply to plasma in the fall and to other blood products in the spring of 2023.

With only one stable partner, it will be possible for these donors to qualify. Previously, it was membership in a risk group that determined a person’s qualification to donate blood. Now, in terms of evaluating sexual behavior, we proceed on an individual basisexplains Héma-Québec spokesperson Laurent-Paul Ménard.

This means that we will be able to welcome people who could not qualify before; in return, some people who could qualify will no longer be able to do so. »

The gain in terms of inclusion will therefore not necessarily result in a larger pool of donors, according to Héma-Québec.

In the United Kingdom, experience tends to show that we end up with a number of donors equivalent to that observed before the implementation of the new criteria.notes Mr. Ménard.

Héma-Québec is therefore continuing its search for new donors, which represents a challenge at a time of the sixth wave of COVID-19.
