Europe could give temporary residency rights to Ukrainian refugees | War in Ukraine

The European Commission proposed on Wednesday to grant some temporary protections to refugees from the war in Ukraine, including residence permits and access to employment and social assistance.

The legislation, designed to deal with the large influx of displaced people into the European Union (EU), plans to give refugees the same rights no matter which member state they are in.

The interior ministers ofEuropean Union will discuss this measure on Thursday.

Since the start of the war on February 24, 450,000 people who have fled Ukraine have headed for Poland, according to its Interior Minister, Pawel Szefernaker. On Tuesday, around 98,000 Ukrainians crossed the Polish border, down from 100,000 the day before.

According to the United Nations, one million people have fled the war so far.
