Ghislaine Maxwell, a former international jet-set figure, was found guilty in December 2021 by Manhattan federal court of a series of sex crimes, including trafficking in underage girls between 1994 and 2004, for the benefit of her former fellow Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in prison in August 2019.
Prosecutors were arguing for a sentence of at least 30 years in prison, insisting the defendant showed no remorse.

Ms Maxwell’s lawyers were instead asking for a sentence of 5 years and 3 months, arguing that she serves as a scapegoat for the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and that she had already spent a lot of time in prison.
A central role, say the victims
Several victims were heard during his trial, alleging instead that Ghislaine Maxwell had a central role in the abuse they suffered from Jeffrey Epstein.
A victim known as Kate, but who wishes to remain anonymous, said she was proud to have helped hold Ms Maxwell accountable for her actions.
