Ghislaine Maxwell sentenced to 20 years in prison for a series of sex crimes

Ghislaine Maxwell, a former international jet-set figure, was found guilty in December 2021 by Manhattan federal court of a series of sex crimes, including trafficking in underage girls between 1994 and 2004, for the benefit of her former fellow Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in prison in August 2019.

Prosecutors were arguing for a sentence of at least 30 years in prison, insisting the defendant showed no remorse. These young girls had dreams and [Ghislaine Maxwell] used these dreams to abuse themsaid prosecutor Alison Moe. It was his choice and the consequences must be significant.

Ms Maxwell’s lawyers were instead asking for a sentence of 5 years and 3 months, arguing that she serves as a scapegoat for the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and that she had already spent a lot of time in prison.

A central role, say the victims

Several victims were heard during his trial, alleging instead that Ghislaine Maxwell had a central role in the abuse they suffered from Jeffrey Epstein.

A victim known as Kate, but who wishes to remain anonymous, said she was proud to have helped hold Ms Maxwell accountable for her actions.

Four victims, of whom Annie Farmer is the only one who agreed to be identified, testified in court, alleging they were assaulted by during the 1990s and 2000s at residences in Florida, New York, New Mexico and the Islands. Virgins by Jeffrey Epstein.

They described how the defendant charmed them, including with gifts and promising that her partner, Epstein, could help them achieve their dreams. She convinced them to give massages to the multimillionaire who quickly took a sexual turn.

One of them was 14 years old at the time.

The biggest regret of my life

Ghislaine Maxwell herself spoke on Tuesday afternoon, expressing her regret at meeting Jeffrey Epstein, whom she described as a man manipulative, cunning and controllingwho has deceived everyone around him. She also said to herself sorry for the pain suffered by the victims. Meeting Jeffrey Epstein is the biggest regret of my life.

The arrest and charges against Jeffrey Epstein, a multimillionaire with friends in high places, has been one of the most high-profile cases in the #MeToo movement.

The maximum sentence was reduced from 65 to 55 years in prison because Judge Alison Nathan overturned the guilty verdicts on two counts, saying they overlapped.
