After a round of critics, no televised gala

The American television channel NBC announced in May that it would not broadcast the Golden Globes ceremony in 2022; a move that came after strong criticism from the entertainment industry for its lack of diversity and transparency.

As has been done for many years, the association gathered journalists at the Beverly Hilton to announce its finalists for the 79th Golden Globes. Nonetheless, this time around, there was no morning show that aired live or any big Hollywood stars immediately celebrating their nomination.

In Hollywood, many believe it was too early for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to resume operations as usual. Some people would even prefer to see the Globes disappear for good.

An organization in full reconstruction

The association says that in the nine months that have passed since its 2021 gala, it has rebuilt itself. The organization added a diversity officer, reshuffled its board of directors and inducted 21 new members, including six journalists from the black community.

She also brought in the civil rights organization National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as part of a five-year partnership, and updated its code of conduct.

An article from Los Angeles Times had earlier detailed some of the unethical behavior of the HFPA and revealed that among its 87 members with the right to vote, there were no or no journalists from the black community.

The studios have said they will boycott the Golden Globes, and more than 100 PR firms have said their clientele will not participate until the HFPA quickly implements a deep and lasting change. Tom Cruise even returned his three Golden Globes.

Despite the lack of a televised gala, the Globes organization still plans to announce the awards on January 9, but has not given any details on the type of ceremony that will be held.
