Spare parts such as batteries, cameras and screens will be on sale in several countries, including Canada. Owners of Google devices will be able to purchase them as a repair kit, with tools, or individually.
Among the smartphones that can be repaired are the Pixel 2, released in 2017, and the brand’s newer models.
A movement in the industry
Samsung announced a similar partnership with iFixit a few days ago. Unlike Google, this one is restricted to US customers at this time, and only covers Galaxy S20 smartphones (launched in 2020) and newer models. The South Korean giant, however, has specified that it intends to extend this service to more devices and countries in the years to come.
Apple also announced at the end of 2021 that it would make self-service repair kits available to its customers.
Google device owners should be able to get their hands on these parts later this year
according to the Californian giant.
Google is committed to improving the lifespan of its devices. The company has notably promised to extend security updates to five years and Android updates to three years on its smartphones, starting with the Pixel 6 model.
