Haiti: Clashes between gangs in downtown Port-au-Prince

Video shot in the capital’s city center shows men running towards police with their hands in the air as gunshots ring out.

Port-au-Prince’s cathedral was partially destroyed by a fire, which authorities suspect is linked to gang violence.

The prisoners of a penitentiary located in the city center escaped from their cells, before trying without success to escape from the prison, announced on the radio the director of the Haitian penitentiary administration, Pierre René François.

Gunshots were also heard in Cité Soleil, where, according to the United Nations, more than 471 people were killed, injured or missing during violence earlier this month.

Haitian gangs have grown in power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.
