“The Aboriginals are always afraid of not being treated, even if our name is Florent Vollant, even if we are known,” says Innu surgeon Stanley Vollant. He is indeed talking about Florent Vollant, the singer-songwriter who recently suffered an intracerebral hemorrhage. The doctor says the family feared the artist would not be treated well at the hospital because he is indigenous.

The surgeon reports that the singer is doing better, but that his recovery will be very long. He adds that Florent Vollant’s family asked him to ensure that the care he receives is adequate.

Dr Stanley Vollant confirms that inequalities in hospitals persist and calls on governments to take concrete action to reverse the situation. He believes that this difference in treatment is the result of “systemic discrimination” which he describes as “insidious”.

Stanley Vollant comes back to several suggestions he made to the authorities in order to eliminate these inequalities. He also asks them about the situation of homeless Indigenous people, one of whom recently died in the cold in Montreal.
