Spotify won’t make history with Car Thing, its app-exclusive in-car music-playing gadget. The device, launched in April 2021, will cease production, according to the company’s latest financial statements.
In an interview with the specialized site TechCrunch, a Spotify spokesperson stated that,
based on several factors, including product demand and supply chain issues, [l’entreprise a] decided to stop production of Car Thing.
The failure of the accessory – a touchscreen with voice commands – is not surprising: the Car Thing only works with Spotify, and only if its (American) users have a premium subscription to the music service as well as a smart phone. You also had to spend a hundred dollars to get it.
We can guess that there is little room for this kind of gadget in a market where connected cars – which can fulfill these same functions – reign supreme.
Spotify wanted to be reassuring for Car Thing owners, who can continue to use the device and its features.
