Ms. Joly and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will discuss the ongoing multilateral effort to repel Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assault on Ukraine.
The virtual meeting was announced Monday shortly after Blinken and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met in person with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in kyiv.
Mr. Blinken said on Monday that international support for Ukraine – involving more than 30 countries, including Canada – was giving
concrete resultswhile the same could not be said of Mr. Putin’s initiatives.
The US Secretary of State said Russia was failing in its attempts to strip Ukraine of its sovereignty.
Later this week, Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand will be in Washington for a series of face-to-face meetings with Mr. Austin at the Pentagon.
This will be Ms. Anand’s very first official visit to the US capital as Minister of National Defence. She will be joined by the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Wayne Eyre, Deputy Minister Bill Matthews and the Chief of the Communications Security Establishment, Shelly Bruce.
Ms. Anand and Mr. Austin are expected to discuss support for Ukraine, as well as the modernization of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The modernization of this bilateral defense system has acquired a new importance today, since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
Already on Tuesday, Minister Amand, General Eyre and Deputy Minister Matthews are due to take part, in Germany, in meetings of the Ukraine Defense Advisory Group, organized by US Secretary Austin.
These meetings will be an important opportunity for partners and allies to discuss Ukraine’s current and future defense needs.the Canadian Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Monday.
