Moscow demands that Washington and its allies assure it that they will not expand the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) eastwards or deploy weapons systems in Ukraine or in countries near the borders Russian.

The United States has already indicated that it will not offer such guarantees, but the Biden administration has said it is ready to discuss Russian requests bilaterally, during a meeting which could take place as early as January, in Geneva.

During his annual press conference on Thursday, President Putin reiterated that heon (his) doorstep “,” text “:” there must be no NATO advance towards the East, and that Moscow will not tolerate a Western weapons system “on (his) footsteps gate”}}”>there must be no NATO advancement towards the East, and that Moscow will not tolerate a Western armaments system “in the footsteps of [sa] gate.

You must give us guarantees, and immediately. Now, he insisted.

So far we are seeing a positive reaction. Our American partners tell us that they are ready to start this discussion, these negotiations, at the start of the year in Geneva.

The remark comes two days after the master of the Kremlin threatened the West with “military and technical measures” if his demands were not accepted.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s annual press conference

Moscow is suspected of preparing an invasion of Ukraine, a former Soviet republic of which part of the territory, Crimea, has already been annexed by Russia in 2014. More than 100,000 Russian soldiers are said to be massed on the Russian side of the border.

Mr Putin once again dismissed the accusations on Thursday, arguing that the anti-Russian policies of Ukraine and its allies, especially in the context of the war against pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, pose a threat to Moscow.

We have to think about our security, not just for today or tomorrow. We can’t live by looking over our shoulders and thinking, what’s going to happen? When are they going to knock?, he said.

He again accused the West of deceiving Russia in the 1990s by violating an alleged promise not to expand NATO to Russian borders. Since then, 14 countries of the former Eastern bloc have in fact joined the Military Alliance, and Ukraine, in turn, is keen to join.

“Not an inch east,” they told us. And then? They cheated. They brazenly deceived us. [Il y a eu] five waves of expansion and now systems [d’armement] appear in Romania and Poland.

President Putin also insisted once again on the need for the Donbass region, controlled by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, to benefit from an autonomy regime, as provided for in the Minsk agreements.

This 2015 agreement, sponsored by Russia and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, enshrined a ceasefire between Kiev and the rebels in Donbass, but has largely gone unheeded.

The future of Donbass should be determined by the people who live in Donbass. There is no other option , said Putin. We see our role as that of a mediator to create the best conditions to determine the future of the people of this territory..

The conflict between Kiev and pro-Russian separatists in Donbass, Ukraine’s industrial heartland, has claimed more than 14,000 lives in the past seven years.
