Sales of the Switch exceed those of the Wii

Japanese giant Nintendo announced on Thursday that it had sold 18.95 million Switch game consoles in the last nine months of 2021, bringing total sales to 103.6 million units, 2 million more than those of the console. Wii.

If this figure is lower than the 24.1 million units sold in the same period the previous year, this threshold highlights the continued demand for the Switch, which is already in its fifth year on the market (the console has been launched in 2017).

In detail, Nintendo sold 11.8 million Switch home consoles and 3.2 million Switch Lite handheld consoles in the first nine months of the fiscal year. As for the Switch OLED model, launched in November to extend the life of the console, it sold 3.99 million units over the period.

Remastered games Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl topped sales for Nintendo, with 14 million copies sold in the last nine months of the year. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also did well with 8 million copies sold for the same period.

Lower forecasts

For the full fiscal year, which will end at the end of March, however, Nintendo lowered its Switch sales forecast to 23 million devices from 24 million previously, due to the global shortage of electronic components.

Rival Sony, which produces the PlayStation (PS), also cut its annual sales forecast for its PS5 console on Wednesday due to supply issues.
