Senegal win their first African Cup of Nations title


Sadio Mané recovered after missing a penalty shot in the seventh minute of the match with the net which confirmed the coronation of the Senegalese formation.

He sent his winning shot to the same side as the one that was blocked earlier in the game.

Senegal has lowered its flag in two African Cup of Nations finals, notably in 2019, in Egypt, against Algeria. Mané was inconsolable after this defeat.

This time he provided the winning moment.

The final played at the Olembe stadium in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, was intended to be a great duel between the two stars of Liverpool: Mané on the Senegalese side against Mohamed Salah for the Egyptians. However, the match never reached the expected level.

Senegal missed multiple chances in the 120 minutes, including Mané’s penalty, which were parried by Egyptian goalkeeper, Gabaski.

Egypt showed signs of fatigue late in the game, as their last three games all ended after the regular 90 minutes. Egypt remains the most successful nation with its seven coronations.

Carlos Queiroz’s squad won the penalty shootout in the round of 16 and in the semi-finals to secure their ticket to the final. She missed two opportunities in Sunday’s session.
