Waves of more than eight meters, very reduced visibility, a temperature of -3 degrees, which make it practically impossible to continue the search, and which endanger the lives of the rescue teams had forced Canadian relief to suspend their activities on Wednesday, recalled José Manuel Albares.

Spain declared a day of national mourning on Monday, the government announced after the shipwreck which is the worst tragedy for fishing in the country for nearly 40 years.

The fishing boat Villa de Pitanxo, flying the Spanish flag, sank on Tuesday 460 kilometers off the coast of the island of Newfoundland, in the icy waters of the Atlantic, east of Canada, with 24 sailors on board , including 16 Spaniards, 5 Peruvians and 3 Ghanaians.

Only three of them could be rescued. Nine bodies were recovered and 12 sailors are still missing.

The water temperature and the state of the sea since Tuesday left no hope of finding survivors.

But in Spain, several relatives of the 12 missing sailors called on Thursday for the search to continue, until all the bodies are recovered.

Several families in the town of Marin, the home port of the trawler in Galicia, in the north-west of the country, have challenged the authorities in this regard.

On Friday, Pope Francis expressed his sincere condolences and his solidarity to the relatives of the victims, the Vatican said in a statement.

Spain said a boat carrying two bodies is expected to arrive in Newfoundland on Friday, followed Saturday morning (for the Spanish time zone) by a second ship carrying the other seven bodies.
