Texas police raid alleged synagogue hostage-taking


On Twitter, Colleyville police said they were conducting a special operation near Pleasant Run Road and urged residents to evacuate the area immediately. The address of the operation corresponds to the synagogue of Congregation Beth Israel.

As of 2:30 p.m. local time, the situation was still In progress. We will continue to provide you with updates through social media, tweeted the police.

There are no injuries inside the building at this time, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Colleyville Police Sergeant Dara Nelson said negotiators made contact with someone inside the synagogue who they believe to be a suspect, said the Dallas Morning News.

The number of people in the synagogue was not known, the sergeant said.

The man could be heard having a one-sided, choppy conversation in what appeared to be a phone call during a live broadcast of the synagogue’s Shabbat service.

I will die, said in particular this man of unknown identity, who repeatedly asked an unidentified interlocutor that his sister be passed to him on the phone.

The broadcast was interrupted around 3 p.m. It showed only a lectern, the people inside the synagogue standing out of frame.
