Towards the signing of an Iranian nuclear agreement

The negotiators have sent signals in this direction in recent days, without giving details, insinuating that there are still some important details to settle before reaching an agreement.

The Reuters agency even claimed on Thursday that it had obtained a copy of the draft agreement, giving some elements on which the negotiators agree.

The deal would be implemented in several stages, according to Reuters.

As a first step, Iran would suspend the enrichment of uranium to more than 5%. Currently, Tehran is enriching uranium up to 60%, according to official statements by the Iranian authorities.

Thereafter, Seoul will be able to unfreeze the 7 billion Iranian dollars that are in South Korean banks because of American sanctions. At the same time, Tehran will initiate the release of American prisoners held in Iran.

Finally, waivers allowing the sale of Iranian oil would be issued again. Under the terms of the 2015 agreement, waivers lasting 90 to 120 days were renewed regularly to allow the sale of Iranian oil until ex-President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the pact in June 2018.

Immediately after this information was published, Iranians responded through Foreign Ministry spokesman Saed Khatibzadeh.

In a statement posted on his Twitter account, Mr. Khatibzadeh said that posting false information is dangerous behaviorpointing out that the final agreement will be very different from the unsourced prefabricated information.

If Iran gets serious, we can and must come to an agreement in the next dayshe added.

The day before, France had warned that Iran had only a few days to join the agreement or trigger a serious crisis of proliferation. For his part, the head of the Iranian delegation, Ali Bagheri had affirmed that the emissaries were closer than ever to an agreement.

Tehran has said it wants, as a guarantee, a political declaration from the American Congress in which the United States undertakes to return to the nuclear agreement and to implement it.

The head of Iranian diplomacy, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, revealed in an interview with FinancialTimes having asked the Iranian negotiators to propose to the Western parties thatat least their parliaments or their president, including the US Congress, can proclaim in the form of a political declaration their commitment to the agreement and to return to implementation of the agreement.

The talks in Vienna aim to save the 2015 agreement which allowed the lifting of international economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for strict limits on its nuclear program supposed to prevent it from acquiring the atomic bomb.

On Thursday, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calledabsurd accusations that his country was preparing to produce an atomic bomb, reaffirming that Iran’s nuclear program was peaceful.

Current US President Joe Biden has said he is ready to return to the agreement, and therefore to lift part of the US sanctions again, provided that the Islamic Republic resumes its commitments.
