Trudeau provides update on Ukraine


Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the media at 4:30 p.m. to make an announcement that we understand will concern the situation in Ukraine, whose eastern borders are threatened by the presence of tens of thousands of Russian troops. He will be accompanied for the occasion by his Defense Minister, Anita Anand.

Mr. Trudeau must deal these days with increasing pressure to take new measures against Moscow in the crisis between Ukraine and Russia.

Kiev is notably asking Ottawa to provide arms to its army, but the Trudeau government has so far contented itself with offering financial and logistical assistance to the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Among other efforts, the Canadian Armed Forces has deployed experts to Ukraine to provide military training that should theoretically be completed by the end of March.

Last week, Ottawa also announced that it would grant Kiev a loan of $120 million in order to strengthen the economy of the country in the face of persistent threats from Moscow.

Russia has mobilized about 100,000 troops to Ukraine’s borders, along with tanks and other heavy artillery, raising fears of a Russian invasion to NATO, the European Union and the United States. United. Moscow has denied such an avenue.

Talks between Russia and Ukraine, Wednesday in Paris, have also concluded with the support ofunconditional respect for the ceasefire in force since July 22, 2020. The parties have also agreed to meet again in Berlin in two weeks.
