United States: President Joe Biden enacts gun control law

US President Joe Biden signed into law on Saturday a text strengthening gun control approved this week by the House of Representatives and the Senate.

It’s a historic day, said the head of state at the White House. It is the first time since 1994 that a law strengthening the control of firearms, the possession and carrying of which are protected by the second amendment to the Constitution, has passed the multiple obstacles systematically opposed to this type of legislation by the powerful NRA (National Rifle Association) lobby and arms manufacturers. Its passage coincides with the Supreme Court’s decision, announced Thursday, to allow Americans to leave their homes with a handgun, a significant victory for gun advocates in a country fractured on the subject and regularly bereaved. by deadly shootings. The text is the result of bipartisan negotiations that began in Congress after the public shock caused by the murders of ten African Americans in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and of 19 children and two teachers in a school in Uvalde, Texas. Among other things, it provides for the seizure of weapons from a person deemed dangerous to themselves or society and increased background checks for buyers under 21 years of age.
