Visit the birthplace of the Olympics as if you were in ancient Greece


They unveiled on Wednesday a website and an application that aims to digitally preserve the current site, but also to restore buildings as they were erected at different times.

History buffs from all over the world can visit the site and follow routes allowing them to discover how the Olympic Games unfolded in Antiquity.

Tourists visiting the very popular archaeological site will also be able to use their smart devices to superimpose period buildings on the ruins, in augmented reality.

In all, the initiative entitled Ancient Olympia: common values preserved and digitally restored 27 monuments of the popular archaeological site, including the original Olympic stadium, the temples of Zeus and Hera, as well as the famous statue of Zeus by the Athenian sculptor Phidias.

The buildings have been recreated with special attention to architectural details, which have been the subject of careful research by Greek government archaeologists. We can also follow the evolution of buildings over time, and images of artifacts from each historical period.

This digital preservation project […] promotes and highlights the unique and emblematic site of ancient Olympia, said in a statement the Greek Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni.

The website is already online (New window), and the app can be downloaded on devices running iOS and Android (by searching for Ancient Olympia). The texts are presented in several languages, including French, but the audio descriptions are only available in English and Greek.
