“Omicron is very fast and very contagious. It catches us by surprise, ”says Dr. Maryse Guay, a medical specialist in public health. The daily number of COVID-19 cases almost hit a new high in Quebec on Thursday with 2,736 new infections. Yet nearly 84% of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine. “We could have prevented this wave better if we had vaccinated 100% of people,” thinks Dr. Guay.

The one who is also a professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Sherbrooke maintains that even before the arrival of the Omicron variant, mathematical models predicted an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases.

the [coronavirus] is a nifty virus that thwarts our predictions, she adds.

During the interview, Dr. Maryse Guay reiterates the importance of being adequately vaccinated. It also answers the following question: Will the third dose really be effective against the Omicron variant?
