YouTube is dropping a good chunk of its original shows

The YouTube Originals division was established in 2016 and is headed by MTV veteran Susanne Daniels.

The objective was to produce, among other things, scripted series, educational videos as well as shows and films about music and its content creators.

For example, the comedy thriller series Scare PewDiePie was funded by the platform and has had some success, despite the fact that Internet users had to subscribe to a paid subscription to YouTube’s Red service to access it. For the first season of the service, YouTube produced 27 series and films which have been viewed 250 million times.

YouTube Originals then adopted a new free formula, with ad-supported content. It gave birth to videos with Katy Perry and Kevin Hart as headliners, without being very successful.

The platform also announced a series starring Will Smith and Alicia Keys last year. YouTube said it would honor its existing commitments.

Change of direction

Programming bearing the YouTube label has failed to attract enough crowds since its inception, prompting the Google-owned company to change its strategy.

The video site’s chief commercial officer, Robert Kyncl, announced on Twitter on Tuesday that he plans to redirect some of the money used to fund YouTube Originals to the Black Voices and YouTube Kids funds.

Content signed YouTube will therefore always be produced, but above all to amplify the voices of creators belonging to the black community. The company also wants to further develop its educational component for children.

The company also plans to invest in the fund for the creation of Shorts, short videos whose format resembles that of its competitor TikTok. It also wants to inject money into its Live Shopping tool, which notably allows the sale of items directly.

Susanne Daniels, who ran YouTube Originals, had already planned to leave the company in March 2022, which contributed to this reorganization, according to Robert Kyncl.
